More Than Her Art, The Guests Admired Her Duality

2015, Plywood and Valchromat, 34 x 28 x 18 Inches

From By Way Of installation

More Than Her Art, The Guests Admired Her Duality is a piece from a body of work titled By Way Of, which investigates gender roles using material and symbols to interpret and communicate the sensuality, starkness, weaknesses and strengths of public expectations and private internalizations. Title from pg.269, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez each piece in the series has a title taken from a line of a male author writing about a woman character. This sculpture is created from a photograph I took of an architectural element at an abandoned cathedral in New Orleans. The element was on the face of the balcony, overlooking the congregation serving no visible known purpose. Here it becomes a symbol of a window or an eye.
