Inflection Point

2013, MDF, Paint, 60 x 5 x 24 Inches

From Myself, Others & Objects installation

Inflection Point is from a body of work titled Myself, Objects and Others shown at The Royal College of Art in London.

Inflection Point is a space in the wall. The entry point is just 5 inches wide so one can only access the interior by turning their hand. It appears on first glance to be grey gradient paint on the wall but when the viewer's eyes hit the bottom, one sees light flowing in and questions if it is a print or a 3D space. Upon closer inspection the space inside opens up and carries a weight of the depth. The inside structure is a shape of an arch from bottom to top so the space becomes skewed and indescribable.

The measurements of the space reflect my body measurements - the height of the opening is my height and the width of the inside is my shoulder width so I can actually fit into the space.  It acts as a comforting private space but yet claustrophobic.  There is a duality of accessible versus inaccessible and makes the viewer question their sense of placement while viewing the space.
